WILMINGTON, NC, March 19, 2013– Imagine that a hurricane has torn through the Cape Fear area causing widespread destruction and knocking out all of the power and lines of communication. How would we reach emergency responders and make sure help gets where it is most needed?  Well, the American Red Cross and the local Ham Radio operators are prepared for emergencies such as this, and they want others to learn what they can do to get involved.

On Sunday, March 24 from 1-4pm, the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross will host a Volunteer Recruitment and Open House at 1102 S. 16th St., Wilmington. The public is invited to come meet volunteers and staff from the Red Cross, ask them questions, hear their experiences and find out more about becoming a Red Cross volunteer.  The open house will include a ham radio & disaster services technology testing/demonstration.

Volunteers are central to the work of the Red Cross throughout eastern NC and in communities across the country. On average, the Red Cross has 15 volunteers for every one employee. These volunteers are people in action—whether providing comfort to a family whose home has been washed away in a flood or getting an emergency message to a member of the military whose family member is critically ill.

For more information, please call the Cape Fear Chapter Volunteer Services Office at (910) 762-2683 ext. 327.
